The Detroit Tigers just beat the New York Yankees in the post season. While I may not be the biggest sports fan, I will always root for my home teams. The Tigers "D" logo is a classic and an excellent excuse to bust out my copic wide marker. Go Tigers!
Weekly Works: Still Dre
I couldn't stop listening to "Still" by JJ tonight. It's a nice and stoney cover of "Still D.R.E" by none other than Dr. Dre and Snoop.
Weekly Works: Graphic Design Ruined My Life
I love graphic design and owe a lot of my life to it, however sometimes I wish I could gaze upon the world without having to visually deconstruct it. After formally learning about graphic design it became near impossible to unsee what lies beneath all design. The closest thing I can compare it to is when I started skateboarding, I couldn't help seeing skate lines everywhere I looked. I'm sure this experience crosses many forms of art and creativity.
Weekly Works: Wobble All Night
If you've been on Turntable.fm then you probably recognize this little guy. Lately my friends and I have been DJing for each other through the site. After hours of searching for songs and jokes I start to feel like our little wobble-headed ginger friend here. I think we all descided no matter how many points we rack up, we're going to stick with this avatar.
"Outer Space" Design Fund Poster
This spring Design Is Love hosted another of their Design Fund projects. The contest was to design a poster with an "Outer Space" theme. The cool part was the winning design would be screen printed using a choice of 2 inks and 1 paper color. I chose the black speckle tone paper with a metallic gold and a white ink. I may make this available on my society6 page for purchase but I really think it works best with the ink and paper combo.
I'm definitely going to pick up a print of the winning poster for myself as well.
Weekly Works: The Letter B
After messing around with my wide lettering marker last night I couldn't resist throwing this together. I always gravitate towards the look of physical design processes like hand lettering or print making. The imperfections and texture help it feel tangible and human.
Weekly Works: Game of Thrones - S1E4
After telling a story of human cannibalism to survive the cold beyond the ice wall, Thorne mutters this chilling line.
Weekly Works: Game of Thrones - S1E3
A line from one of the gnarliest grandma monologues ever.
Weekly Works: Game of Thrones - S1E2
I'm pretty stoked on all the wolves in this show. I have a couple episodes to catch up on since michelle was out of town. More on the way.
Weekly Works: Dirty Rotten Muties afterJames Stokoe
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had gotten back into comics a bit. Not so much the collecting but checking out cool stories and rad art styles. A friend of mine turned me on to James Stokoe's work with Orc Stain, Wonton Soup, and Murderbullets. Stokoe creates, writes, draws, letters, and colors all of his mind blowing work himself.
This poster is inspired by Murderbullets, which you can read online here.
Weekly Works: Game of Thrones - S1E4
I've started watching Game of Thrones. In the first episode the line "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword." stuck with me a bit. Seems pretty honorable, anyway I'm stoked to see where this show goes. I heard the books were good.
Weekly Works: Dad Designs - Chain Links
Here is the other design my dad taught me how to draw. I find it interesting that both designs included a simple illusion of dimension. What I like most is that there is a definite process in creating each design. This concludes the extent of my fathers design lessons. Needless to say I got my creative talents from my mother.
You can buy this poster and several others on my society6 page.
Weekly Works: Dad Designs - Compass Rose
My father is not known for his drawing abilities, in fact I've seen him draw 2 things in my entire life. Both of which he taught me how to draw when I was about 5 years old. Here's one of them.
You can buy this poster and several others on my society6 page.
Help Japan
I'm just going to throw this out there into the internet, just feels right. For more information and to get involved, visit the Google Crisis Response page and The American Red Cross.
Weekly Works: The Larry Sanders Show - Totally LA
I've become completely obsessed with the poster that is on the wall of the writers room on The Larry Sanders Show. Right now IFC is showing reruns of the show, which I was too young to "get" when it originally aired. I've scoured the internet for this poster with no success. Back in the 90's these posters spoofed the "All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten" book written by Robert Fulghum.
As you can see there's more text to the original poster. Since I couldn't find the original anywhere, I figured I'd recreate it.
Weekly Works: Top 3 games 2010 - Red Dead Redemption
Finally my top favorite game of 2010 was Red Dead Redemption. What blew me away about the game was how well Rockstar was able to tell a structured and focused story within such a wide open world. I highly recomend playing this one all the way through to the end... the real end.
You can buy this poster and several others on my society6 page.
Weekly Works: Top 3 games 2010 - Mass Effect 2
My next favorite game of 2010 was Mass Effect 2. Really I should include the first Mass Effect, since the decisions and relationships carry over into the sequel and make both games in the series even better. I felt that the fish tank in Shepard's quarters was a nice metaphor for the rest of the game. You travel around the galaxy collecting your team members and nurturing your relationships with them between missions, in hopes that they will survive the journey.
Weekly Works: Top 3 games 2010 - Limbo
My top 3 games of 2010 series starts off with Limbo. A simple puzzle platformer with excellent physics and animation available on xbox live. What really sets Limbo apart as on of my favorites is it's peerless sounds design and visual style. The over all game experience is enhanced by the thoughtful presentation of story and mechanics through discovery rather than cut scenes, dialogue, or instructions. I suggest you try it.
Weekly Works: Orphans Muscle Horse
I've already used a lot of yellow in my posters, but what's an homage to Ryan Due and the Orphans moped gang from Brooklyn without the classic MBT red, yellow, black and white? Anyone who knows Ryan, understands his appreciation for horses, WWF, and Mortal Kombat. It only makes sense.
You can buy this poster and several others on my society6 page.
Weekly Works: Latebirds Zombie Sign
The Los Angeles Latebirds are my moped gang away from home. These dudes always make me feel welcome like a brother. I've always wanted to put a zombie finish on their gang hand sign, it's been asking for it.
You can buy this poster and several others on my society6 page.
